Geophysics could now be used to discover ancient graves. Researchers specializing in geoscience have been experimenting with the theory. The team buried pigs underground and removed samples of earth located above their graves. They feel that they may have developed a special toolkit that could be useful for archaeologists and geophysicists. The goal of the study is to create a reliable toolkit that could be used to find bodies.

Information gathered by studying samples collected could provide a glimpse into the inner workings of ancient civilizations. Bodies discovered could provide insight on major historical events, burial customs and criminal cases. The toolkit could be used to research the deaths of thousands of people who may have been murdered or tortured before being buried in far-removed areas.

The study was formally presented at the Meeting of the Americas in Cancun, Mexico. The information gathered from these major events could be used to promote human rights and provide closure for loved ones of family members who were murdered for reasons unknown. Finding clandestine burials throughout the globe is a challenge for geophysicists. Researchers have proposed burying eight different pigs into several types of graves.

The samples would then be removed from these locations and tested using any number of assessment methods. This latest discovery will be helpful in investigating murders. Scientists hope to be able to conduct resistivity survey and other types of testing to study mass graves. Radar, magnetometry and other methods will be used several years from now to explore these graves further.
